A series of gunfire broke out and lasted for 45 minutes at Myanmar-Bangladesh border on Friday afternoon.
The incident happened after the
neighbouring country alleged that a soldier from Border Guard Bangladesh
was shot dead during a clash on Wednesday.
The dead soldier was taken across the border by Myanmar troops, said the Bangladesh media reports.
Border guards from both sides of the border seemed to have lost trust in the other.
Bangladesh has refused to be held
accountable for cross-border attacks involving insurgents from Rohingya
Solidarity Organisation. A Myanmar military officer said that border
police teams were confused whether the insurgent attacks were attributed
to the RSO or the BGB.
The Daily Eleven tried but failed to get the confirmation of the incident from the Myanmar border police force.
According earlier news reports, the RSO
insurgents initiated an attack inside the Myanmar border on Wednesday.
Myanmar troops retaliated, killing one RSO insurgent.
Later the BSB requested Myanmar to
verify whether the man killed was its missing soldier or the insurgent.
Both sides went to the clash site, border post No 52, for verification.
“Clash happened because they intruded
and attacked on our border area. We did in accordance with the border
security measures. The arrested man was wearing yellow camouflage
without badge. He approached the border defence line, so we open fire.
Later, he was identified as the BGB officer. Bangladesh asks us to
return him. We will meet in early June. But the date is not confirmed
yet,” said a border official speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Maungdaw residents live in fear of border fight.
“We are very afraid of living (at
border). We heard the gun shots. Everybody has now been frightened,” a
resident of Tamanthar village in Maungdaw said.
Tension seems to have escalated due to suspicious movements from border troops of both countries after the Wednesday’s clash.
“The Myanmar Border Police is supposed
to return the body today (Friday), but we have just received reports
that gunfire has erupted at the border,” said AFP report quoting Devdash
Bhattacharya, police chief in the Southeastern district of Bandarban in
Bangladesh.
After the border fight, Bangladesh beefed up its border security opposite Myanmar.
The brigade of Nykhangchhari Township in
Bangladesh strengthened its deployment, including armoured vehicles.
Some 500 troops were dispatched to BGB camps located from the border
posts 37 to 65.

Bangladesh, Myanmar at odds over deadly border clash
(Reuters) - Bangladesh has lodged a protest with Myanmar
over what it called an unprovoked attack against its border guards by
Myanmar security forces on May 30, following an earlier exchange of fire
in which one Bangladeshi guard was killed.
Myanmar has given a different version of events and has warned Bangladesh it will not tolerate any violation of its sovereignty or territory.
Major General Aziz Ahmed, head of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), told reporters on Saturday that a body handed over by the Myanmar side was that of guard Mizanur Rahman, 43, who had gone missing on May 28.
In a statement on Saturday, the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry said it had called in Myanmar's ambassador to protest at an "unprovoked eruption of gunfire from the Myanmar border force" on May 30.
"The Myanmar Ambassador was told that a BGB team was waiting near border pillar no. 52 for identification of the dead body which was proposed by the Myanmar side. However, to the complete surprise of the BGB, Myanmar border forces suddenly started firing on the waiting BGB team without any provocation," it said.
Myanmar's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the first incident on May 28 involved Myanmar troops and "two suspected armed Bengalis in yellow camouflage uniform who entered into Myanmar territory" in Maungdaw Township. One was killed and the other fled into Bangladesh, it said.
Many in Myanmar, including government officials, use the term "Bengali" to refer to Rohingya people, hundreds of thousands of whom live in the northwestern state of Rakhine.
They are seen by Myanmar as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. They are denied citizenship and increasingly live in segregated camps after outbreaks of communal violence over the past two years.
"There was no BGB team patrolling along the border ... on that day, as claimed by the Bangladesh side," Myanmar's Foreign Ministry said. It denied that Myanmar troops opened fire on any BGB members and said the clothing worn by the man who was killed did not match the BGB uniform.
On the May 30 incident, it said Myanmar had asked the BGB to "fetch the dead body at the Boundary Pillar 52 where the exchange of fire had occurred". The allegation that the Myanmar side started to fire was "far from the reality", it added.
Bangladesh's statement noted a reported deployment of Myanmar forces along the border and said that violated a 1980 agreement, so the forces should be withdrawn.
It added that Myanmar should not "allow any action that may affect the friendly bilateral relations" between the two.
For its part, Myanmar said it would "resort to diplomatic means to solve problems peacefully in view of existing bilateral friendly relations and good neighborliness".

After being tipped off that those believed to be RSO’s insurgents were active on Myanmar-Bangladesh border, the local security squad was engaged in a clash with two RSO insurgents on 28 May, killing one and seizing a gun and some ammunition.
On 29 May, the Bangladeshi military attaché office in Yangon informed Myanmar that one member of their patrol team was reported missing while on duty, demanding the handover of the man if captured or the return of his remains if killed. The Myanmar side replied that a body in yellow camouflage uniform was found near Boundary Pillar 52 on its territory and promised the handover if it was their missing patrol team member.
On 31 May, the Border Guard of Bangladesh identified the dead body as their man, expressing their understanding of the incident and appreciating Myanmar’s help with the return of the body. They also promised their return of help in case Myanmar needed.
Regarding the incident that occurred on the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh, a coordination meeting is expected to follow, with focuses on the continuity of relations, trust and friendship between the two countries, measures to make sure that insurgent groups cannot be stationed on the border, and non-repetition of unwanted border problems.
